Man Utd could be set for the ultimate embarrassment in their long-running pursuit of Frenkie de Jong with the news that their Treble-winning neighbours Man City are now interested.

Erik ten Hag has been trying to persuade the 26-year-old de Jong to leave Barcelona for Old Trafford ever since walking through the door last summer, so far to no avail.

Apparently the Red Devils even tabled a massive €100m bid last summer - but not even that could convince de Jong that his future lay in the Premier League.

Now though there is a fascinating new wrinkle - one that is sure to make all Reds grimace with the impending pain. Pep Guardiola and City want de Jong.

According to The Mirror, the buoyant Blues are not resting on their laurels after winning everything their hearts desired in 2022-23.

They have already lost out to Arsenal in the race to sign midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham, and now the tabloid claims they are turning their attentions to de Jong with a £90m price tag referenced.

The noises from Barcelona meanwhile are predictably mixed. On one hand they say de Jong is 'untouchable', but on the other is the clear reality that their financial situation means no player is off limits in the transfer market.

These are very early stages - and at this stage there is nothing concrete from City. But if this progresses it might be the ultimate low for Man Utd fans as they see target after target go elsewhere. And that long-running Sheikh Jassim vs Sir Jim Ratcliffe takeover saga rumble on.
