Chelsea will continue their spending spree with the signing of Cole Palmer after agreeing a deal to sign the England under-21 international from Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been desperate to sign an attacking player, having seen attempts for the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Ansu Fati and Jamal Musiala fail in the recent days.

But after making an approach to City for Palmer in the past day, both sides came to a quick negotiation to push through a deal before Friday’s transfer deadline, with the 21-year-old now set to travel to London for a medical, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea will pay City £40 million up front, with an additional £5m in add-ons, to bring in one of the brightest prospects under Pep Guardiola, who had already netted in the Community Shield and European Super Cup final this season.

Palmer had played just 19 times in the Premier League for City throughout his career but was expecting to feature heavily this year after the departure of Riyad Mahrez earlier in the summer.

But Guardiola revealed after the Super Cup that Palmer had wanted to leave for more game time which seemingly alerted Chelsea to his availability and the winger is set to become the Blues’ 11th signing of the summer.

Palmer likely to be final signing of Chelsea’s astonishing summer

The outlay will take Chelsea’s spending to just shy of £1 billion in the three transfer windows under Todd Boehly, although the focus will now likely be outgoings before the end of the month.

Trevoh Chalobah has been told he can leave for a fee of £50m, with Bayern Munich interested, while Conor Gallagher has been the subject of interest from Brighton.

Marc Cucurella could still depart to Manchester United on loan, although a deal could drag into Friday’s deadline with both sides still yet to agree a loan fee.

Fringe players such as Malang Sarr and Callum Hudson-Odoi are also expected to leave but it appears, barring any unforeseen developments – which are always likely at Chelsea – the club’s incomings could finally be done for the summer.
