The Gabon international earned a move to Stamford Bridge in September 2022 on the back of a sparkling start to the year with Barcelona.

After leaving Arsenal on a free transfer, Aubameyang hit 11 goals in 17 Liga games to revitalise the Catalans' strikeforce, before being declared surplus to requirements due to the arrival of Robert Lewandowski.

His time at Chelsea subsequently proved a disaster as he managed just three goals in 21 games for the Blues, and new boss Mauricio Pochettino agreed to release him from the final year of his contract in order to sign with Marseille.

But it is clear that nightmare still rankles with Aubameyang as he slammed the instability which he suggested contributed to his poor form.

"I think it's simple to explain.," he told reporters at a press conference presenting him as a Marseille player.

"The manner in which I was received by both the players and the staff, at Chelsea, the context was a bit different. Because I arrived at Chelsea in no small part due to Thomas Tuchel, and a week later, he had been sacked.

“So the two contexts were not at all similar, it was not easy for me, and that had an influence.

"From there I basically didn’t play anymore. And then later there were problems of a different nature that were not my fault.”

Marseille become Aubameyang's fourth club in just 18 months, having spent the preceding four years leading the line for Arsenal.

In spite of his Chelsea woes the striker remains a threat in front of goal and has averaged more than a goal every two games for Barca, the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund over the past decade.
