Erik ten Hag was forced to play Diogo Dalot at left-back against Nottingham Forest on Saturday after Shaw joined Tyrell Malacia on the treatment table at Old Trafford.

Following news that Shaw could be set for a lengthy spell out of the side due to injury, Man Utd have been drafting up possible short-term replacement options.

Tottenham Hotspur's Ivan Perisic was one such player, although a loan move was rejected by the Croatian, as exclusively reported by FootballTransfers, while Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella is another candidate, as per Fabrizio Romano.

According to The Telegraph, Sergio Reguilon and Alonso are also being considered as options, but the Barcelona star has reportedly turned down the opportunity to move back to the Premier League.

Alonso, 32, spent time at Bolton and Sunderland in his early years, before he made his name in England at Chelsea, winning six trophies, including the 2021 Champions League, during a six-year stint in west London.

The defender, who has nine caps for the Spanish national team, left Stamford Bridge last summer to join Barca on a free transfer, and he does not want to leave Camp Nou for Man Utd, according to ESPN, via the Metro.

Alonso wants to extend Barcelona stay

Furthermore, Alonso would like to extend his current Blaugrana contract, which is due to run out next summer.

He made 37 appearances for Xavi’s side in all competitions last year and the 4-3 win over Villarreal marked his first start of the new campaign.

Alonso was not in the matchday squad for Barca’s 0-0 draw with Getafe on the opening weekend or their 2-0 win over Cadiz in matchday two.
