SHOCK West Ham transfer could change everything for Maguire
West Ham star Nayef Aguerd is being linked with a shock return to Stade Rennais, which could open the door for another Harry Maguire attempt by the Hammers.
Aguerd arrived from Stade Rennais last year and quickly became an important player for David Moyes. Indeed, he proved his value in the Hammers' most recent game, a stunning 3-1 win over Chelsea. Aguerd scored and despite getting his marching orders due to two yellow cards, the Moroccan received a standing ovation from the West Ham faithful for his performance.
Now, however, Footmercato reports that he could make a surprise return to Rennes. In fact, the player is said to be keen on re-signing for his former club, who have already made some impressive signings this summer.
BREAKING: Mason Greenwood leaves Man Utd by mutual consent
Aguerd admitted after a pre-season friendly between Rennes and the Hammers - which the former won 3-1 - that it was "hard to leave Rennes." A return would be surprising, and it would put West Ham in an awkward position.
Maguire deal back on?
The Hammers had been in the market for a central defender - perhaps because of the talks between Aguerd and Rennes - but their deal to sign Harry Maguire from Manchester United ultimately fell through. Nevertheless, when it became clear that the transfer was off, there were reports that the two sides could return to the negotiating table eventually.
Though United will be wary of letting Maguire walk this late in the window, especially since Inter are closing in on Erik ten Hag favourite Benjamin Pavard, they could perhaps be convinced to still offload their former captain given that he does not feature prominently in the Dutchman's plans.

If Aguerd were to leave, West Ham would be smart to seek to reactive the Maguire deal as they would otherwise be short on options in central defence. The above-mentioned report claims that Aguerd was a topic during West Ham's talks for Rennes star Jeremy Doku, who appears to be heading to Manchester City.
