Manchester United have slapped an eyebrow-raising asking price on Scott McTominay, according to a report.

The midfielder is being heavily linked with a move to West Ham. The Hammers had tried to complete a double swoop for the Scot and former Man Utd captain Harry Maguire, but are now having to negotiate seperate deals in order to sign the duo of outcasts.

Maguire appears to be close to a move and will set the east London club back some €35 million, while the Red Devils rejected an initial offer in a similar region for McTominay.

The 26-year-old has had a mixed bag of a career at Old Trafford. Occasionally showing immense signs of promise, the academy graduate ultimately never managed to show the consistency or quality to become a mainstay in the midfield of such an ambitious club.

United ask for hefty fee

Despite McTominay clearly not being part of Erik ten Hag’s plans, it will take a hefty fee to prise him away from United.

According to The Guardian, the Red Devils are asking for a sum in the region of €52m, more than double his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €23.3m.

If matched, West Ham will have spent a combined €87m on the Man Utd duo of Maguire and McTominay. The Hammers have struggled to complete their summer business thus far, only officially signing Edson Alvarez from Ajax.

As for United, the money generated from these two sales would go a long way towards funding moves for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and a Maguire replacement.

Benjamin Pavard would be the Red Devils' favourite to replace their former club captain, but Bayern Munich’s transfer stance and asking price may give Ten Hag and company second thoughts. The perennial Bundesliga champions are reluctant to sell despite his contract expiring next year.
