Manchester United were prepared to sell Jadon Sancho even before his recent spat with manager Erik ten Hag, according to a report in The Athletic.

Ten Hag left the winger out of the Man Utd squad that was beaten by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their last Premier League outing and publicly attacked Sancho following the game.

The player hit back with a post on social media in which he claimed he had been made a “scapegoat” for the club’s problems.

Ten Hag was prompted to make his attack after becoming “increasingly exasperated with Sancho’s punctuality and what he perceived as sluggishness in training”, which it is claimed is a frustration that “some” teammates share.

The former Ajax boss had already thought of selling Sancho, though.

In the summer, Saudi Pro League clubs made an approach for the 23-year-old England international and were quoted a price of €75 million (£65m) to buy the player.

While this is cut-price compared to the €85m that Man Utd bought the player for, it still represents a huge hike on his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), which has steadily declined since he joined the club.

What is Jadon Sancho worth?

Sancho, whose contract at Old Trafford runs until 2026, hit a peak valuation of €109m and was still worth €99m when United bought him. Since then, though, his decline has been precipitous

His current valuation is only €45m and continues to slide as he is deprived of the game time required to boost it.

But the situation took an unexpected twist when Antony was given a leave of absence following allegations towards the player of domestic abuse – claims that he denies.

Indeed, a truce could be nearing, with discussions on Tuesday resulting in Sancho finally taking down his social media response to Ten Hag more than a week after it had gone live.

Back on the pitch, his value will rise if he is given game time, which could play into United’s hands ahead of the January transfer window – assuming, of course, Antony is available by that point.
