Brest have revealed that they turned down the opportunity to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United this summer.

Greenwood was suspended by the Red Devils for a period of 18 months while he was investigated internally following accusations made towards him regarding his private life.

The attacker was also subject to a police investigation until February, 2023, when he had charges against him relating to allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault dropped following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”, the Crown Prosecution Service stated.

Man Utd subsequently released a statement indicating that they backed their player’s innocence and would help him to find a new club.

The Red Devils ultimately sealed a loan with LaLiga outfit Getafe, but it has since been revealed that Greenwood might have moved instead to France’s top flight.

’Brest didn’t consider Greenwood for a second’

“I was offered Mason Greenwood, who Manchester United have frozen out for reasons outside sport,” Brest sporting director Gregory Lorenzi told Le Telegramme.

“Between the controversy and the salary, we didn’t consider following it up for a second.”

Greenwood would typically be a player completely out of the reach of a club like Brest, which underlines the difficulty that the once-capped England international has had in finding himself a club amid his off-field issues.

Getafe’s move to sign the striker on a one-year loan deal has generated a great deal of controversy, with the Spanish club angering women’s rights campaigners with their decision to add the 21-year-old to their squad.

Greenwood has not played competitive football since January 2022 and his return could potentially come at home against Osasuna on 17 September in a match that will unexpectedly fall into the public focus for a team that has scored only two LaLiga goals so far this season.
