Tottenham have made a last-ditch effort to sign Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah on Deadline Day, according to football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs are seeking to add defensive numbers to Ange Postecoglou’s ranks and are seeking to sign the 24-year-old, who has won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea.

Romano points out that a deal with Chelsea threatens to be complicated because of the late nature of the move but also because Nottingham Forest are seeking to make a permanent move for Chalobah, who has made 63 appearances in all competitions for the Stamford Bridge club after coming through the academy.

Deadline Day: Every confirmed transfer around Europe

He states: “Tottenham approach Chelsea to ask for Trevoh Chalobah on loan deal, no green light from Chelsea, difficult due to rival and formula of deal.

“Complicated deal while Forest still trying to make permanent deal happen for Chalobah but no green light player side.”

Chalobah to leave Chelsea?

Chelsea are open to an exit for Chalobah, who was strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich, which fell through as the Bundesliga transfer window shut early on Friday.

It had been reported that he was not interested in a move to Forest prior to that, but Tottenham could be a more appealing proposition given their status, location and promising start to the season.

As Romano points out, it would be a controversial decision from the Blues to allow an academy product to depart to their greatest rivals, yet the realities of Financial Fair Play and their big spending in recent windows mean that such a possibility should not be ruled out.

Chalobah is presently on the sidelines with a thigh injury and has not featured for Chelsea as a result.
