Kai Havertz sent Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday with a late winner against Brentford – and Gooners lapped up a player already branded a flop grabbing the headlines.

Havertz has had a difficult start to life at Arsenal since making a big-money transfer from arch-rivals Chelsea in the summer, but fans are hopeful that he has changed the trajectory of his career at the Emirates Stadium thanks to his 89th-minute winner against the Bees.

Mikel Arteta’s side had spent much of the match frustrated by the home team, with Leandro Trossard having a goal chopped off in the first half for offside.

Havertz, though, came off the bench to head home a cross from Bukayo Saka to send the visiting supporters delirious just as it seemed they had failed to take advantage of Manchester City’s draw with Liverpool earlier in the day. It was just his second Premier League goal for the club.

Here’s how fans online reacted to a moment that might be pivotal in the title race as supporters in the ground chanted the name of their hero for the evening.

There were many tweets hailing the moment as a turning point for the Germany international. “Kai Havertz has arrived. Only scores big goals,” a Gooner said in a tweet that captured the mood of many fans.

“Kai Havertz might have changed his Arsenal career with that goal,” one said.

Another added: “Kai Havertz really went and did it. Good job to football’s Charlie Brown.”

It was also pointed out what the goal means for the manager.

"Arteta loves Havertz so much, look at him carrying him to the away fans. I don't think there's a signing he's made that he wants to succeed more than him. Now it’s all about consistency for Kai and continuing this confidence in future games," a Gooner said.

Chelsea reaction to Havertz goal

For Chelsea fans, seeing Havertz scoring the winner was a bitter pill to swallow after their team had been thumped 4-1 at Newcastle earlier in the day.

“NO WAY DID THEY LET KAI HAVERTZ SCORE,” one Blue lamented.

Another account went for a less dramatic: “Had to be Kai Havertz. End this day.”
