The Blues defender is facing an uncertain future. Though still, incredibly, a regular starter at age 39, the Brazilian is rapidly approaching the end of his contract, which expires in the summer.

There have been no suggestions that Chelsea, who are stacked in the centre-back department when everyone is fit, have any desire to extend the veteran's stay. On the contrary, Silva has admitted that “the end of my career is approaching" and that "it's about seeing where to finish off this beautiful career."

What did Bittencourt say?

Speaking to TNT Sports, the Fluminense president revealed his plans to sign Silva at the end of his Chelsea deal. “I continue with this desire to bring him in. For the brilliant player he is, for his high performance at his age. That he’s a Tricolor [Fluminense] great. I’m sure that one day he could play for Fluminense again.”

Silva previously featured for the Serie A side all the way back in the mid to late 2000s. He joined the club on loan from Dynamo Moscow in 2006 and played in Rio de Janeiro until 2009 when he returned to Europe with AC Milan, kickstarting his eminently successful career on the continent.

The Brazilian made north of 100 appearances for Fluminense during his time at the club and won the Copa do Brasil in 2007 as well as racking up several personal accolades. At Chelsea, he has become Mr. Reliable while his highly-rated peers have struggled with injuries. Despite his age, Silva continues to impress, playing every minute of every Premier League game so far this term.
