Fabrizio Romano has doused cold water on the reports linking Liverpool with a move for Lucas Beraldo.

The 19-year-old defender has been starring for mid-table Sao Paulo in his native Brazil and this has, unsurprisingly, attracted the attention of big-name European clubs who are always keeping an eye on the talent factory that is Serie A.

Among the sides that have been said to be keen on Beraldo are Liverpool as they scour the market for a young, left-footed centre-back. Over the summer, the Anfield club were already keen to add that type of player, which gave rise to links to eventual Tottenham recruit Micky van de Ven, though nothing ultimately materialised.

In recent months, Liverpool had been heavily linked with a move for another highly-rated young Brazilian in Fluminense midfielder Andre, but the Reds have moved on to different targets now. As for Beraldo, it seems that their interest was never particularly concrete in the first place. At least that's what Fabrizio Romano has claimed.

What did Romano say?

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the transfer expert asserted: “Lucas Beraldo – There has been talk of Liverpool being interested in signing Brazilian youngster Lucas Beraldo from Sao Paulo. However, I’m not hearing anything – not aware of that or of any negotiations for him at this stage.”

“Liverpool are always linked with many players but there’s nothing concrete so far," the Italian continued. "He’s [a] very good player, a talented young centre-back. I like him, but I think he probably needs one more step before joining a super top club like Liverpool.”

To date, Beraldo has made 48 senior appearances for Sao Paulo. The youngster played the full 180 minutes as his club triumphed over two legs over Flamengo in the Copa do Brasil final in September, keeping a clean sheet in the first game.
