Newcastle pursue 'extraordinary' Ruben Neves alternative
Newcastle United have reportedly identified Atalanta midfielder Ederson as an alternative to Al-Hilal star Ruben Neves as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his midfield.
Injuries and suspensions have stretched the Magpies’ squad in recent weeks, with their downturn in form coinciding with poor availability at Howe’s disposal.
In a bid to improve their squad depth, Newcastle are planning several moves in 2024 as they look to secure a European place for the second consecutive season.

FootballTransfers have exclusively reported that Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is being monitored ahead of a possible move next year, while midfield is also an area of concern.
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Neves has been tipped for a loan move to St James’ Park as Newcastle’s owners PIF also own Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal.
Neves joined the Saudi Arabian side for €55 million during the summer, but has been linked with a return to the Premier League due to his current club’s connections with Newcastle.

However, a move to Howe’s side has been complicated recently as Premier League bosses are set to vote on a temporary ban on loan transfers between clubs with the same ownership.
According to the Daily Mail, Premier League shareholders will hold a vote later this month to implement a temporary ban on loan transactions between sides sharing the same owners. The report asserts that the required majority of 14 out of 20 votes will be reached.
While only a temporary measure at first, it could pave the way for permanent legislation on the matter. Though not confirmed, the reports linking Neves with Newcastle could have been the straw that broke the camel's back for shareholders who already harboured concerns about multi-club ownership.
Newcastle want Ederson
With a potential move for Neves complicated by these reports, Newcastle have now targeted a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
The 24-year-old Brazilian has scored four goals in 12 Serie A appearances this season and won Atalanta’s October Player of the Month award.
Furthermore, Atalanta CEO Licas Percassi recently told Sky Italia: “(Ederson is on a) growing journey. An extraordinary boy, on and off the pitch.
“His performances speak for him. We are happy with what he is doing. The club has made a great investment and we need to be patient.
“Last year, he already played well but this year even more so.”
