Antony’s contributions to Manchester United this season have been so bad that he is even being outperformed offensively by a number of goalkeepers.

The right winger joined from Ajax in the summer of 2022 for €100 million and big things were expected of Erik ten Hag’s former pupil.

However, Antony has been an unmitigated disaster at Old Trafford. He bagged just four Premier League goals in his inaugural season and looked well short of the physical, mental and even technical levels required to play for such a big team.

Despite this, Ten Hag persisted with Antony in the starting XI in 2023-24 but things have gone from bad to worse.

We are now into December and incredibly Antony has still not scored or assisted a single goal in all competitions this season. This is despite the 23-year-old making 14 appearances.

Most fans and pundits find it difficult to understand how Antony can continue to play when he is making no tangible contribution to Man Utd’s attack.

What is even more embarrassing is that around Europe there are a number of goalkeepers who have even managed to make goal contributions, both in terms of goals and assists.

The most famous example came in the Champions League in matchday one when Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel headed home an equaliser deep into injury time to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid. It was Provedel’s second goal of his career, perhaps United should sign him for the right wing!

Staying in the Champions League, Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich grabbed an assist for Lois Openda during the 3-2 defeat to Manchester City last week.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan created Christian Pulisic’s goal in the 3-1 Serie A win against Frosinone last weekend with a long ball over the top of the defence. It was the third season in a row that Maignan has got an assist. The Frenchman is certainly more creative that the Brazilian right now!

Staying in Serie A, this past weekend saw goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone win a penalty deep into injury time to earn Lecce a 1-1 draw against Bologna at home. That is a better offensive contribution than Antony has managed this season, with the Brazilian failing to win a single spot-kick.

Saving the best until last, Ballyclare Comrades goalkeeper Declan Breen scored an incredible goal from his own box in October in the 6-3 NIFL league win over Ards in Northern Ireland.

All of these goalkeepers above have more goal contributing actions than Antony in 2023-24.
