EXCLUSIVE: Dan Ashworth will only join Man Utd if Glazers promise ONE thing
Newcastle director of football Dan Ashworth’s potential departure to Manchester United is dependent on whether the Glazers will continue to have a large say on football operations, FootballTransfers understands.
The former Brighton chief would only be open to a switch to Old Trafford if he is significantly backed and allowed the same freedom he’s been afforded at Newcastle.
Naturally, the Magpies’ position is that he’s focused on the matter at hand at St James’ Park - but the prospect of joining one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League is something that interests the 52-year-old.
However, Ashworth will only accept a move to Man Utd if he works in tandem with the new regime and his operations are not affected by any influence from the Glazer family.
Dan Ashworth to leave Newcastle for Manchester United?
Ashworth is very happy in his role at Newcastle, but he could be attracted by a switch to Old Trafford owing to his previous relationship with Sir Dave Brailsworth, who is extremely eager to bring in the highly-rated football executive.
Ineos will look to bring in both Ashworth and Paul Mitchell, who FootballTransfers revealed Man Utd were keen on earlier this year, as their main two leaders in the recruitment department.
As previously reported, Mitchell is in line for a job at Old Trafford and recently moved to the north west of England to bolster his chances of securing a role with Erik ten Hag’s side.
The Dutch coach’s influence at the club will be reduced and he will not have as much of a say in transfers if Ashworth and Mitchell arrive, following some of the poor choices he’s made over the last three windows.
There has been some criticism within the club, too, of the former Ajax boss overworking some squad members and playing them too quickly on return from injury.
Furthermore, we are told that if Jadon Sancho leaves, Marcus Edwards may be identified as his replacement.
