Liverpool ready to cancel disastrous defender deal

Liverpool are set to recall Calvin Ramsay in light of Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury, the right-back having been underused since going out on loan to Preston North End at the start of the season.

Liverpool have been ruthless in recalling loan players ahead of time during the winter transfer window.

Wales left-back Owen Beck has been brought back from Dundee with Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas both sustaining long-term injuries.

Alongside him, Fabio Carvalho and Rhys Williams have been recalled from RB Leipzig and Celtic respectively, with the Reds unhappy at the playing time they received at their host clubs.

And Ramsay looks set to be the next to follow, with Alexander-Arnold's injury and his own lack of playing time both part of the reason why.

Ramsay recall imminent

"Liverpool are in talks with Preston North End over prematurely ending Calvin Ramsay‘s loan stint at the club," reports Jack Lusby for This is Anfield.

"The Scot moved to Deepdale on a season-long deal in August in a bid for regular minutes after enduring an injury-hit debut campaign at Anfield.

However, he has managed just two appearances as a result of further fitness problems… Liverpool are now ready to recall Ramsay as a result."

Alexander-Arnold is expected to be back from injury in a matter of weeks, and it remains to be seen if Ramsay will be kept around to provide cover or sent out on another, hopefully more productive, loan.

Carvalho has already signed for Hull until the end of the season. Beck, in contrast, is likely to get the rest of the campaign at Anfield.

Liverpool are looking to bolster their defence come the end of the season, meanwhile, with Wolfsburg's Maxence Lacroix now understood to be the first choice to replace the outgoing Joel Matip.
