Liverpool contact transfer guru ahead of post-Klopp 'revolution' - Romano

Liverpool attempted to bring transfer guru Michael Edwards back to the club at the weekend, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds will be in need of a new coach at the end of the season, but perhaps even more pressing than finding a replacement for Jurgen Klopp is the necessity to bring in a new person responsible for transfers. Sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will depart after the January window and a successor must be found as the new recruitment chief will be in charge of hiring a new coach.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool approached former sporting director Michael Edwards at the weekend, offering him a new role at the club that would have seen him manage the 'restructuring' in the wake of Klopp's exit. Edwards famously built the all-conquering Reds side that won the Champions League and Premier League, making a name for himself as something of a transfer guru, before leaving in 2022.

Edwards, however, snubbed the Reds, according to the Italian transfer expert. Therefore, the Anfield club will have to look elsewhere for someone to oversee the 'revolution' at the club.

Liverpool's transfer revolution

In addition to Klopp, several senior players are also coming to the end of their time on Merseyside, chiefly captain Virgil van Dijk, who only has 18 months left to run on his contract and recently hinted that he could be on the way out, admitting that he "doesn't know" whether he will be part of the post-Klopp era.

Romano expects something of a transfer revolution at Liverpool following the German's departure. “I think it’s completely normal. As Van Dijk said, Liverpool need a new director, new manager, new staff…it will be a revolution inside the club,” Romano told CaughtOffside. "So it’s impossible to know what’s next for the players who are out of contract in June 2025."

"Step by step. New director, then new manager, then time to make important decisions. It’s the same with Thiago Alcantara, who is out of contract at the end of this season. It’s too early to say for now what will happen – if you don’t have a manager/director, no one is making these kinds of decisions."
