Romano reveals next Man Utd player to leave in transfer to be completed next week
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are prepared to give away one rising star for absolutely nothing in a transfer that is set to be completed next week.
Man Utd have been struggling for goals all season, yet they are prepared to part company with Colombia U20 forward Mateo Mejia on a free transfer, with the former Real Zaragoza youngster close to agreeing a deal with LaLiga side Sevilla.
United will, however, retain a substantial sell-on clause for the striker, acting as some kind of insurance policy in case Mejia, who has been at Old Trafford since 2019 and only signed a new contract last summer, ultimately makes it big in the game.
Taking to X, Romano stated: “Sevilla agree deal to sign Mateo Mejia from Manchester United on permanent transfer. Documents to be signed next week.
“The 2003-born striker will leave the club on free permanent deal as contract was due to expire in June.
“Manchester United will have 25% sell-on clause for Mejia.”
Mejia's Man Utd career
Meija never made an appearance for the Man Utd senior team but was instead heavily involved with the U23 side in the Premier League 2.
Primarily featuring off the right wing, he scored three goals and created five more in nine matches for the young Red Devils, having started all but one fixture this season.
Mejia now returns to Spain, where he was born, to continue his professional career with Sevilla, a club that is fighting for its LaLiga life this season.
He will hope to make a breakthrough at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, where Los Rojiblancos have not been too short on goals given they have found the net 25 times in 20 games.
His chance at Man Utd was clearly not going to come, however, with first-team boss Erik ten Hag constantly overlooking him despite the first team’s obvious struggles in front of goal.
