Toney windfall: Newcastle set for much-needed FFP boost

Newcastle will receive a sizeable windfall from Ivan Toney's summer transfer.

The Brentford striker is on his way out. Having already flirted with a January exit, Toney is set to depart the Bees in the next transfer window. Head coach Thomas Frank all but confirmed this when he recently admitted that he is very likely to be sold due to his contract situation, with his deal expiring in 2025.

Indeed, Brentford have already signed a replacement for the 27-year-old in Igor Thiago from Club Brugge, who will arrive in the summer for a club-record €33 million. The announcement of the signing of the prolific 22-year-old on Tuesday was further tangible proof that Ivan Toney will not be a Brentford player next term.

At this point, it is not yet clear where Toney will end up. Arsenal and Man Utd have been most prominently linked, while Chelsea are now firmly back in the race in light of the news that PSG will attempt to make the Blues' top target, Victor Osimhen, the successor to Kylian Mbappe. One thing is clear, though: Toney will fetch a hefty sum, and not only for Brentford.

Three clubs to profit from Toney

At least three clubs will stand to benefit from Toney's big-money summer transfer. While he likely won't cost the €100m Brentford had wanted in January, the Bees could still rake in €60m, €70m, €80m from his departure. This would represent a massive profit as they only paid €5.6m upfront to sign him from Peterborough in 2020.

According to Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, this fee has since more than doubled seemingly due to bonuses. At the time, Newcastle received 30 per cent of that €5.6m due to a sell-on clause and they will also profit from a summer transfer.

“We have received £10 million so far from Brentford and we will receive X amount – I’m not allowed to say the number – of any future profit and Newcastle will receive 30% of what we get from it," MacAnthony revealed on his podcast in January.

“We earn money every time Ivan moves and so do Newcastle. That’s how these deals are structured and I’m all for it. It’s like a chain reaction and it’s the best thing."

As Brentford's profit will be sizeable, so will the money they will have to share with Peterborough and Newcastle, which will be a welcome windfall for the Magpies, who have been hamstrung by Financial Fair Play regulations and will likely have to make at least one big sale in the summer.
