Kylian Mbappe looks increasingly likely to leave PSG for Real Madrid in the summer, but just because this is a transfer that has long been discussed does it mean it is the right move for the France star.

In the wake of the news that Mbappe will depart Paris at the end of his contract in the summer, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Friday dropped the biggest hint yet that he wants the 25-year-old to move to the Emirates Stadium.

In many ways, the Gunners are a better fit for the World Cup winner than Los Blancos, who are, of course, the player’s dream club.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that the Gunners were weighing up a financial package to attract Mbappe last summer, and it would be surprising if they were not once again appraising the possibility of a deal – particularly after Arteta has urged them to do so.

“Why not? If we want to be the best team, then you need to have the best players, that's for sure,” he said.

“The club that we are, I don't think that's ever been an issue. Everyone wants to play for Arsenal.”

Three reasons Arsenal are better for Mbappe than Madrid

Arsenal must hold an appeal to Mbappe for several reasons.

Firstly, they can guarantee him football in his preferred position on the left wing. This is something that cannot be said at Real Madrid, where Vini Jr occupies that flank with authority and quality.

That’s not to say that Gabriel Martinelli is a weak link for the Gunners, it’s just that Mbappe is clearly an upgrade.

Secondly, there’s the issue of star power, which is something that Mbappe has enjoyed virtually since he first broke onto the scene.

Go to Arsenal and he will be their biggest signing in history, but at Real Madrid, he faces being overshadowed by Jude Bellingham. The forward is not someone who has grown used to playing second fiddle to anyone so the prospect of losing his star status is surely not appealing.

Finally, there is the issue of LaLiga. Real Madrid may be one of the biggest clubs in the world, but he cannot achieve anything at the Bernabeu that has not been done before. Los Blancos hold a dominance in Spain that may not be quiet comparable to that which PSG enjoy in France, but there is little doubt that they are clearly the dominant club in the country.

With Barcelona’s financial position catastrophic, domestic success is nearly as guarantee as it would be at Parc des Princes.

The Premier League, on the other hand, offers a far greater challenge, and one that is unique.

Arsenal are seeking to reclaim their place among the European greats and could still be looking for their first league title in nearly 20 years by the time he arrives as well as their first ever European Cup.

While he is likely to be a footnote in the history of Real Madrid, where Cristiano Ronaldo will be unsurpassed as the club’s modern great, the possibility of leading the Gunners to unattained heights offers the tantalising prospect of immortality for Mbappe, whose obsession with a legacy is well known.
