Fabrizio Romano has played down Liverpool's supposed interest in Leroy Sane.

The Reds are in for a major summer overhaul. The departure of Jurgen Klopp will ring in the end of an era and some of the club's star players of recent years are also coming towards the conclusion of their time at Anfield.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, both on the wrong side of 30 now, don't have long to run on their contracts and the latter continues to be courted by the Saudi Pro League. There is every chance that the Reds could at last be tempted to cash in on the Egyptian in the summer should a Saudi giant come calling again with an eye-watering offer.

This means that Liverpool may have to plan for a future without the 31-year-old and indeed links to players of a similar profile to the Egyptian King continue to abound. Johan Bakayoko, for example, is one option, with the electric winger expected to depart PSV in the summer, according to the club's sporting director.

Bayern and Germany star Leroy Sane has also been touted as a potential Salah replacement on Merseyside, but Fabrizio Romano is not so sure where these rumours are coming from.

Liverpool not in for Sane

The 28-year-old is out of contract in 2025 and thus far there has been little movement on the part of Bayern to get him to commit his future to the club due to the seismic shakeup of the Bavarians' sporting leadership in the summer. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga champions are naturally keen to keep one of their star players.

Sane recently switched to a new agency and the expectation is that contract talks will (re)start soon, which will make it difficult for Liverpool or any other club to swoop for the winger. “Sane has a new agent now, so it will be time to discuss his contract situation at Bayern again and with a new person in charge soon,” Romano told CaughtOffside.

“Discussions will take place and the situation will be clarified. However, I don’t know where Liverpool links are coming from as they don’t have a [sporting] director nor a manager in place for next season, and these appointments will be crucial before deciding transfer targets.”
