Romano confirms Man Utd eye Arsenal superfan with Gunners tattoo
Manchester United are keeping an eye on midfielder Morten Hjulmand, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Dane has been one of the standout performers at Sporting CP this term after arriving from Italian side Lecce in the summer for €18 million. A holding midfielder by trade, the 24-year-old has been a solid presence at the base of midfield in a team whose attacking options, chief among them Viktor Gyokeres, have stolen the headlines.
Hjulmand's form this term has attracted the attention of bigger sides. Indeed, already in January, Man Utd were linked with a move for the Dane, but a winter transfer was always incredibly unlikely. When they signed him, Sporting fitted the player with a release clause worth a whopping €80m, a fee the Red Devils could not have paid in their wildest dreams.
In the summer, however, it could be a different story. Aflush with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's funds, the Red Devils could look to strengthen their defensive midfield position. Sofyan Amrabat has failed to live up to the hype and likely won't stay permanently and age is catching up with Casemiro, making this one of the departments that desperately needs reinforcing.
Man Utd scouting Hjulmand
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Man Utd are indeed scouting Hjulmand as a potential midfield option. However, it is still too early for anything concrete to materialise. Plus, the Dane is a massive Arsenal fan which could yet throw up some complications.
“Linked with Manchester United after some fine form this season, Morten Hjulmand has been scouted but there’s nothing concrete at the moment," Romano told CaughtOffside.
"He also had admirers at Lecce, but there’s nothing serious happening at the moment. It’s also true that he’s an Arsenal fan!” Hjulmand idolised Patrick Vieira growing up and has the Arsenal crest tattooed on his left arm.
