Mason Greenwood: Transfer interest grows in Man Utd outcast

Manchester United outcast Mason Greenwood has an increasing number of options ahead of the summer transfer window, with clubs starting to line up to sign the forward.

Greenwood was sent out on loan by the Red Devils to Getae last summer following an investigation into his private life led by the club after a police case was dropped following the withdrawal of a key witness. Greenwood had denied all allegations.

The 22-year-old has been rebuilding his career in Spain, scoring five goals in LaLiga and setting up four more for Getafe.

With his future still looking like to lie away from Old Trafford, the young forward has been courted by Barcelona but the Camp Nou side face competition to land him.

Greenwood is also being targeted by Atletico Madrid, according to The Telegraph.

Atleti are known to be in the market for a centre-forward, having missed out on Moise Kean late in the January transfer window after the Juventus striker failed a medical.

Greenwood still a problem for Man Utd

Although Greenwood is away from Man Utd, his future remains a thorny issue.

The club faced criticism for their refusal to sack him in the wake of the allegations that were made against him while there is also the prospect of further reproach should they land a big transfer fee for the once-capped England striker based on this context.

Greenwood once had an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €76.7 million but that figure has dropped to €16.6m after 20 months without competitive football before the beginning of this campaign.

He still has one year to run on his Man Utd contract, while the club can also take up the option to extend that deal until 2026 – a move that would further court controversy given Greenwood’s history.
