Tottenham Hotspur are set to complete the signing of Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall after hijacking Barcelona’s pursuit of the teenager.

Bergvall, 18, was expected to move to Camp Nou after weeks of negotiating, but a stunning late twist saw Spurs convince him to snub interest from Barcelona and join the north London club instead.

The midfielder is regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects and his imminent arrival is seen as a major coup for Tottenham.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Bergvall from Djurgarden for €10 million, plus add-ons.

He will sign a five-year deal with Spurs, and will stay with Djugarden until the end of the current season before joining Tottenham’s first-team squad this summer.

Bergvall reportedly visited Tottenham on Monday and Barcelona on Tuesday, and was convinced that moving to England would be best for his development.

Lucas Bergvall to join Tottenham

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has backed up Ornstein’s report, posting on X: “It’s Lucas Bergvall day at Spurs today as he arrives in London for medical tests and contract signing.

"2006 born talent turns 18 today and he’s now allowed to sign the professional contract, valid from July.

"Deal hijacked at final stages as he was close to joining Barça.”

Bergvall has made 29 senior appearances for Djugarden, scoring three goals and providing one assist, after joining the club from fellow Swedish outfit Brommapojkarna for €900k in February 2023.

One year later, he is on the verge of sealing a mega money move to Tottenham.

Spurs’ hijack of Barcelona’s deal to sign Bergvall is reminiscent of when Chelsea swooped in late to snatch Willian from Tottenham’s grasp in 2013. The Brazilian was undergoing his medical in north London before the Blues entered the race at the last minute and struck an agreement to sign him for €25.5m.
