'Not the right move for us' - Postecoglou pokes fun at Hamilton to Ferrari

The biggest transfer on Deadline Day had nothing to do with football.

On Friday, news broke that record Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton is close to ditching Mercedes for Ferrari in a blockbuster move that is being described as one of the biggest in the sport's history. Ferrari's share prices went through the roof even before a deal was officially announced.

Hamilton's departure from Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season will bring down the curtain on an eleven-year stint with the Silver Arrows. The 39-year-old has been with Mercedes since 2013 and six of his seven world titles have been won with them.

However, Hamilton hasn’t triumphed in a race since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, with Mercedes suffering a downturn in form following regulation changes ahead of the 2022 season. Now, he is set to realise his lifelong dream of joining Ferrari.

Postecoglou on Hamilton to Ferrari

The Hamilton news stole the headlines on English football's transfer Deadline Day. Now, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has given his thoughts on the F1 driver forcing his way into the spotlight that should have belonged to Spurs.

The north London club had a brilliant transfer window, signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin for €25 million and spectacularly hijacking Barcelona's deal to sign Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall.

Speaking about Spurs' window, Postecoglou jokingly said: "Probably the only disappointing one was yesterday. I thought there was a really good opportunity for us and, yeah, the club didn't feel it was the right move for us. So, disappointed with that, but he ended up at Ferrari, so we just have to cope [with it]."

The Australian then turned to the journalists in the room and exclaimed: "Oh, look at you all! You were ready to type away...Nah, it [the window] was a good one, mate, it was a good one."
