The Blues will need to let go of several players in order to go on another spending spree and Cucurella is one that will be up for sale.

The Spaniard has disappointed in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge, having arrived from Brighton in 2022.

Chelsea saw off competition from Manchester City with their £63 million transfer offer but that is surely a move they now regret.

He has played 45 times in all competitions, as a traditional full-back, a wing-back and as a wide centre-back, and has failed to make his mark anywhere.

The report suggests that the west London club are now willing to take an enormous loss on the former Barcelona youngster.

They have set an asking price of between £30m and £35m - a remarkable £33m less than what they paid the Seagulls.

Chelsea's left-back situation

Chelsea's first-choice left-back at this moment is Ben Chilwell, who returned from a long-term injury not long ago.

Chilwell was excellent as a wing-back under Thomas Tuchel but has not been able to produce the same form under Mauricio Pochettino.

As Cucurella has also spent a long time on the sidelines this season, Levi Colwill has often been asked to play on the left side of the defence.

A natural central-back, Colwill has struggled with one-on-one defending of pacey wingers, such as Mohamed Salah, and offers little going forward.

Pochettino did have another option in Ian Maatsen, but he was loaned out to Borussia Dortmund in January.

The Dutchman has excelled in the Bundesliga and Blues fans have been left perplexed that he was not given more of a chance.

Now, with Cucurella reportedly leaving and Maatsen likely to want to continue at Dortmund next season, it seems inevitable that Chelsea will target a left-back in the summer.

Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies, who supported the club in his youth, would be a dream signing, while Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez seems much more realistic.
