Fabrizio Romano has lifted the lid on the latest Liverpool transfer rumours, which have linked Luis Diaz with a sensational summer move to Barcelona.

The Colombia winger played a key role for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they picked up a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the weekend in a vital Premier League encounter, but that has not stopped him from being associated with a switch to Barca.

After a difficult campaign at Anfield, in which he has scored 11 times in 38 matches, Diaz is unlikely to be going to Camp Nou, Romano says.

“I want to reassure fans that I’m not hearing anything about Luis Diaz and Barcelona, despite some stories about his agent meeting with Barca. Diaz’s full focus is on Liverpool and also I don’t think it’s possible for Barcelona to go and pay the kind of crazy fee that would be required for Diaz,” he wrote on the Daily Briefing.

With Barcelona facing severe financial difficulties, they would have to sell two or three major stars before considering a move for a player like Diaz, making such a transfer, if not impossible, very difficult.

Romano on Edwards’ move

Romano also discussed Michael Edwards’ return to Anfield, which was confirmed by owners FSG on Tuesday.

He has revealed the complicated nature of the negotiations.

“Edwards initially rejected Liverpool’s advances, but another round of talks sealed the deal. He was also on the shortlist of multiple other clubs in the recent years, including Manchester United and Chelsea, but also clubs from abroad. He was never attracted by any possibility until Liverpool returned, it made the difference,” Romano says.

“Meanwhile, Richard Hughes will also leave Bournemouth for Liverpool at the end of the season to form part of the new structure under Edwards. Hughes has done impressive work at Bournemouth and it looks like a smart appointment.”
