Liverpool have been backed to attempt a stunning swoop for Nicolo Barella by Italian media.

The Inter star has once again been in stunning form for the Nerrazzuri this season as they stroll to another Serie A title. A two-time midfielder of the year, the 27-year-old is the best in his position in Italy and has been for some time.

Crucial as Inter reached the Champions League final last term, Barella also announced himself to those not familiar with Serie A and he has only gone from strength to strength since. This, of course, has made him an attractive commodity.

The Italy star has often been linked with a Premier League move, but given his level, it would require a truly massive offer to prise him away from Milan. Intriguingly, a report from Il Secolo XIX has now claimed that Liverpool and Man City would be prepared to launch just such a massive bid.

Barella to Liverpool?

According to the Italian outlet, a Premier League club, with the report speculating that it's either the Reds or City, are ready to 'submit a pharaonic offer' for the Inter star, who is under contract until 2026.

Liverpool are said to be long-time admirers of the Italian, but it seems unlikely that they are pushing for his signature right now given the circumstances. The Reds don't have a sporting director right now and will have to hire a new coach in the summer, casting doubt on the fact that another midfield reinforcement is their priority right now.

As for Inter, they are naturally keen to tie Barella down to a new deal, with the above-mentioned report claiming that they are 'intensifying their efforts' to make a contract extension happen. Barella appears very settled in Milan and has given little indication that he is looking for a way out.
