But following the acquisition of a 10-year extension with Adidas last summer, new legislation regarding Champions League qualification have been negotiated and now they will be hit with a £10m penalty every time they fail to qualify, reports The Times.

Details of the possible deductions were mentioned in the Premier League giant’s financial report, which read: "As a result of the men's first team qualifying for the 2023-24 Champions League, no deductions are due under the original term. Under the extended term, this clause has been amended to state that a £10 million deduction will be applied for each year of non-participation in the Uefa Champions League."

Man Utd managed to achieve a spot in the competition last term but were unable to reach the knockout stages.

This season, the side are eight points off a spot, with Aston Villa occupying fourth in the table with ten games in the Premier League remaining.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s new co-owner, is set to inject a significant amount of cash for their summer transfer window so they can get up to speed for the next campaign.
