Man Utd eye summer swoop for Evan Ferguson - but there's a problem

Manchester United are interested in Evan Ferguson, but the fee required to sign him will be a major stumbling block.

The Red Devils are one of the Premier League giants who are in the market for a new striker for the summer. Just like Arsenal and Chelsea, Man Utd are keen to add a big-name centre-forward in the upcoming transfer window and these three clubs are battling for the same targets.

One of those targets is Brighton wonderkid Evan Ferguson. FootballTransfers already revealed last summer that the Irishman would be a major target for Arsenal this year, while we also reported that both Man Utd and Chelsea had failed with January approaches for the teenager.

The 19-year-old will be one to watch in the summer despite coming back down to earth this term off the back of a truly spectacular breakout campaign last time out. Ferguson netted 16 goals in 2022/23, but he is sitting on just six for the current season.

Nevertheless, the Brighton youngster remains a sought-after commodity and Man Utd could become one of his most serious suitors in the summer.

Man Utd keen but fee an issue

That's at least according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who reports that the Red Devils are keen on Ferguson, but that the fee required to sign him could prove to be a major issue.

"Evan Ferguson is a possibility, along with a number of other strikers that are being looked at by Manchester United," Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT. "With Ferguson, the price could well be a stumbling block. It's going to be difficult for Manchester United to find that £100m or so for any one player in any position without outgoings first, which is why we may not know a clearer picture until after the 30th June."

"Brighton don't put valuations on players. So the feeling that Ferguson is £100m is based upon age, potential, profile, demand, and the fact that relatively recently, he signed a new deal. So Brighton are well protected. Then add to that how they handled the Moises Caicedo exit, and it's logical to think that nobody is going to get Evan Ferguson on the cheap."
