Steve Kerr to Chelsea? Jamie Redknapp has an even more ridiculous idea

The suggestion that Steve Kerr, the head coach of NBA franchise the Golden State Warriors, had been approached by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly over the possibility of replacing Mauricio Pochettino caused football Twitter to pause for thought briefly earlier this week.

Of course, the rumour was complete nonsense, emanating from a rogue account, yet the way that the Blues have been run since Boehly took command nearly two years ago had people fleetingly doubtful.

If and when Mauricio Pochettino departs Chelsea, it will be a football manager and not Kerr to take charge.

Crossovers in sport are, of course, possible but rare.

At Manchester United, Sir Dave Brailsford is set to play a leading role in the reconstruction of the Red Devils. Although he has experience in the football world at Nice, he is primarily recognised for his achievements in cycling with Team Sky.

England’s rugby World Cup-winning boss Clive Woodward, meanwhile, had a role at Championship club Southampton as technical director, where he worked alongside Harry Redknapp. He lasted around a year.

The idea that Kerr would have day-to-day responsibilities coaching a football team, though, was a step further than this.

And yet, this is not necessarily the craziest managerial rumour doing the rounds this week.

Gerrard to Liverpool… really!?

Steven Gerrard is being linked with the Liverpool job in succession to Jurgen Klopp, with Jamie Redknapp endorsing the idea.

“I know people will say that he was a failure at Aston Villa and it didn’t go great there, but he’s a Liverpool man and was an incredible player for them,” Redknapp claimed.

“He’s got passion for the game and I used to listen to him speak when he was at Rangers and always thought he was going to be top drawer. I would love to see him manage Liverpool.

“I know I’m probably not in the majority when I say it should be Steven Gerrard but I’ve still got belief in him – I don’t write people off.

“It’s a different club with different players and the circumstances are different – it just worked for him there. I’m in Steven Gerrard’s corner for this one.”

Gerrard, who is presently managing Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, has blown his chance for the moment.

He lasted less than a year at Aston Villa, departing with the Birmingham club just three points clear of the relegation zone. Once Unai Emery got his hands on the same players, he lifted them to seventh. The improvement has continued since under the Spaniard.

It’s true that passion is one of the attributes that has made Klopp a great Liverpool manager, but he has so much more.

The idea that Gerrard is a suitable successor at Anfield purely because he has ‘Liverpool DNA’ as ludicrous as the suggestion that Chelsea should give Kerr the chance to replace Pochettino.
