Lijnders has been coaching The Reds since 2014, and is set to leave when Klopp departs at the end of the season.

The German announced his decision to leave a few months ago and it has been agreed that Feyenoord boss Arne Slot will replace him this summer.

Now, Henk De Jong, who worked with Slot at Dutch side Cambuur, recently held a meeting with Liverpool, in which he discovered something extremely interesting.

Indeed, he revealed to the Daily Mirror that the Merseyside club are keen to see Lijnders return one day.

“Everyone at Liverpool is hoping that Arne is going to do really well," said De Jong.

"Pep Lijnders is not staying, but I sensed everyone at Liverpool is hoping Pep will come back to the club one day.

“They all spoke very highly about him and I really think he has built a big reputation for himself."

Upon leaving Liverpool in June, Lijnders will endeavour to find success as a head coach over the next few years.

He will undoubtedly have to work his way up the football ladder first, but it seems there is a chance that Lijnders could be on the touchline at Anfield again one day.

Virgil van Dijk on Pep Lijnders return

Virgil van Dijk has given his thoughts on Lijnders career prospects as a manager.

And the Liverpool defender seems to be very optimistic about his countryman's chances of succeeding.

"Hopefully he will carry on his development, and if he becomes a head coach somewhere then he could be very successful," Van Dijk previously told Mirror Football.

"You never know that the future might bring. You need a bit of luck as a coach as well, and you need the right circumstances, but he’s been very important for the success of the club and we will never forget that.

"So whatever happens I wish him all the best and the success that he deserves, so let’s see. I should also be exciting for him to see what the next chapter will be. I will forever be thankful for everything he’s done for us in the football club."
