Rio Ferdinand is angry with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag over the way he has treated Casemiro.

The Brazil international has been used as a makeshift centre-back in recent matches against Crystal Palace and Arsenal but has struggled in both games.

Casemiro’s display was roundly criticised as United crashed to a 4-0 defeat to Palace away from home last Monday while he was also partly at fault as Leandro Trossard scored the winner for the Gunners in a 1-0 loss at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The veteran, who is linked with a summer transfer away from the club, potentially to the Saudi Pro League, finds himself in the firing line, but Ferdinand, who was a centre-back by trade during his distinguished career with the Red Devils says “it’s not fair” on a player who is a defensive midfielder.

And he points the finger of blame at the situation firmly at Ten Hag.

“When is he going to take Casemiro out of the backline,” Ferdinand said on his 'Vibe with Five Podcast'. “Why can’t Sofyan Ambrabat play there or Scott McTominay? Was McTominay injured?

“I just don’t think it’s fair. If you see a few mistakes from somebody who is playing there, who has never played there before, and you see those mistakes early, you should go: ‘Do you know what? I’m not going to do this to you.

“'I don’t care how experienced he is, I’m not going to do this to him. Come on. We’ll move you out of there and get you back to the position you know.’"

Wan-Bissaka before Casemiro

Aaron Wan-Bissaka would have been a potential option to fill in at centre-back, according to Ferdinand.

“That’s the most natural thing for me. Aaron Wan-Bissaka centre-back and Amrabat at right-back, because he was happy to play him left-back for a few games. I don’t know. We just look like we’re on repeat here. We look like we are an uncoached team,” he added.

“In the creative end of the pitch we were also lacking massively. Decision making and quality just weren’t there.”

Man Utd face Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday before rounding out their Premier League season at Brighton next Sunday,
