Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount could be handed a chance to save his career at Old Trafford following news that Bayern Munich are set to pursue a summer move for Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes, 29, is currently the Red Devils’ club captain, but he is reportedly open to an exit during the upcoming transfer window as the club embark on a new era under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS reign.

Erik ten Hag may also be sacked amid the Red Devils’ poor form this season and a number of replacement options have been linked in recent weeks, including Brentford’s Thomas Frank - as first exclusively reported by FootballTransfers.

According to The Independent, Bayern Munich are interested in signing Fernandes this summer and the Portuguese international is reportedly open to the idea of leaving Man Utd in order to compete for major honours.

Bruno Fernandes to save Mason Mount’s Man Utd career?

With Fernandes potential heading towards the Old Trafford exit door, it could hand Mount a Man Utd lifeline.

The former England international has endured a torrid first campaign at the club, mustering just 753 minutes of action in a Red Devils shirt due to major injury issues since arriving from Chelsea.

Mount only has one goal and one assist to his name this season, and there are question marks over whether he is capable of playing in the same midfield as Fernandes. The pair played next to each other during the early weeks of the campaign - with Casemiro sat deeper - and Man Utd were constantly overrun through the middle of the park as a result.

Furthermore, Mainoo’s emergence as a quality number eight means there is no place for Mount in Man Utd’s preferred starting XI. However, if Fernandes leaves, amid Bayern interest, it could open the door for the Englishman to become the Red Devils’ first-choice attacking midfielder.
