Mason Greenwood announces EXIT as Man Utd transfer rumours build

The future of Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood remains unresolves, but one thing is for clear: he will not stay where he is.

Greenwood has spent the 2023/24 season at Getafe, where he has scored 10 goals in all competitions and laid on a further seven assists.

The Spanish side had indicated that they wanted to keep the 22-year-old, who was on a year-long loan from Man Utd, even potentially sign him on a permanent basis, although finances were always likely to make that a challenge.

Greenwood, meanwhile, appears to have put an end to Getafe’s hopes of a deal via a message on Instagram.

“Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season. Thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second alongside my teammates and club,” he posted.

“A bittersweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you. I wish you all the best.”

Will Greenwood play for Man Utd again?

Greenwood is unlikely to play for Man Utd again following an internal investigation at the club concluding last summer that the best thing for him to do was leave, despite charges of attempted rape and assault against the player being dropped. The forward denied these accusations.

With his contract set to expire in 2025, United are likely to push for a permanent transfer this summer, with interest in the player primarily arriving from Italy.

Napoli and Juventus have both been linked with the player, with the latter even preparing to sell three forwards to make a move for the once-capped England international, according to reports in Italy.

Clubs in LaLiga may also take an interest. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have both been associated with a potential transfer, though a deal will be difficult to broker for Barca given their financial problems.

FootballTransfers revealed that Atleti were quoted €60 million to sign the forward when they enquired about him in March.

Man Utd minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, meanwhile, has indicated that the decision over Greenwood will not be hurried.

“He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football,” Ratcliffe claimed. “So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.”
