The bargain Hojlund backup transfer Man Utd can STEAL from Premier League rivals
One of the best Premier League goalscorers in recent years could be available for a bargain price this summer if any side in need of a striker is willing to take a gamble on a patchy fitness record.
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has admitted his future could be in doubt at St James’ Park as the 32-year-old enters the final year of his contract, with the Magpies open to cashing in on their number nine.
With a goals-per-90 ratio that comes close to the likes of Erling Haaland and teammate Alexander Isak, the suggestion that Wilson could be for sale may prove shocking to some, particularly given Eddie Howe’s vocal determination to keep the veteran around.

But Newcastle’s battle with Premier League profit and sustainability rules means that Wilson’s departure is something that will likely be explored, especially considering his injuries, wages and desire to play week in, week out.
And, while Wilson has missed 48% of Newcastle’s games this season, the England international has still scored more Premier League goals than players such as Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund despite his lack of game time.
The consistent supply of goals when fit means that Wilson still remains a valuable player to any side and, having mentioned Rashford and Hojlund, a move to Manchester United could represent the best option for all parties if a transfer is to happen.
Why Wilson is the perfect backup to Hojlund at Man Utd
Man Utd will explore the market for an experienced alternative to Hojlund after seeing the 21-year-old struggle to shoulder the scoring load for Erik ten Hag’s side this season without a true backup.
Real Madrid loanee Joselu is thought to be on United’s shortlist, indicating the profile of striker Ten Hag is seeking and, while Wilson is perhaps not as physically commanding as the Spaniard or Hojlund, his experience on and off the pitch would be a huge asset.

Just like at Newcastle, playing as a backup to a first choice striker may not be ideal for Wilson but, given his fitness issues, a situation where is not relied on to play 90 minutes twice a week could only be beneficial to his longevity.
A stumbling block would be Newcastle’s reluctance to conduct a deal with a divisional rival, as seen with the Red Devils’ pursuit of director Dan Ashworth, however the need to sell Wilson would take priority, especially for the right price.
There is also expected to be interest in Wilson from Saudi Arabian teams, while Premier League sides will surely be open to taking a gamble who has netted 47 goals since 2020 – a feat bettered by just five players, with only Isak and Haaland scoring at a quicker rate.
Although Wilson has missed 37% of Premier League games during that time, the presence of a proven goalscorer like him would only strengthen the depth in a top side and Man Utd or any similar side will struggle to find similar value in the market, making the Newcastle star a no brainer despite his injuries.
