The Gunners are seeking to sign a new midfielder amid concerns over Thomas Partey’s future at the club, and Onana has emerged as their latest legitimate target.

The Belgian international has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for several months, but Arsenal could press ahead in their pursuit of Onana following Euro 2024.

Mikel Arteta’s side look set to miss out on both Douglas Luiz and Martin Zubimendi, and Onana has been identified as an alternative.

However, Manchester United are also interested in the 22-year-old as they prepare to rival Arsenal for his signature.

What has Fabrizio Romano said?

Following reports of Arsenal’s interest in Onana, Romano spoke to CaughtOffside. “Many of you have been asking me about the Amadou Onana situation,” he said.

“For now it’s certainly the case that Everton feel something could happen for Onana this summer, and that’s why they’re not accepting any proposal from Manchester United for Jarrad Branthwaite.

“Still, it’s also important to say that Everton expect movement for Onana. We’ve had rumours about Arsenal but at the moment they have not received any formal proposal.”

Romano continued: “Arsenal have been tracking Onana, he’s a player on their list, also last summer and in January, though they decided not to enter into conversations.

“Arsenal keep monitoring Onana but at the moment there is nothing in terms of direct contacts, so let’s see what happens, but for Everton the expectation is for some clubs to move for the Belgian midfielder.”

Onana’s current contract at Everton runs until 2027, while his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €17.1 million.

The Toffees midfielder made 37 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
