Tierney jarred his knee midway through the second half of the encounter as he tracked back in a bid to block a Swiss attack in the fixture, which finished as a 1-1 draw.

He collapsed to the ground in obvious pain and was removed from the field on a stretcher.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke immediately indicated after the game that he thought the injury was a bad one.

“It looks pretty bad. We have to assess it but Kieran won't make the next game,” he told BBC Sport.

“He's a top player for us. Does ever so well. It's a shame but someone else has got to step in and step up to the mark.”

Injury curse strikes again

It is just the latest in a line of injury blows to befall the 27-year-old left-back, with these constant physical problems part of the reason he was replaced by Mikel Arteta in the left-back role.

But now this problem poses a serious headache for Arsenal, who would have counted on a transfer fee for the defender this summer. There is a strong possibility that Tierney faces missing out until beyond the end of the transfer window, jeopardising a potential move and potentially costing the Gunners millions – as well as the opportunity to reinforce their side in another position.

According to recent reports, Arsenal were willing to accept a fee of just €12 million (£10m) for the Scotland international, who has an Estimated Transfer Value of closer to €21m. Newcastle have supposedly turned him down at this price, leaving his future at the top level under question.

At his peak, he was worth €64m, yet constant injury problems have seen Tierney’s valuation plummet and mean that any club moving for him this summer would be taking a major risk.
