David Ornstein confirms Arsenal deal to sign Ajax goalkeeper

Arsenal have finalised a deal with Ajax to buy goalkeeper Tommy Setford, according to David Ornstein.

The Athletic reporter has stated that after prolonged talks, the two clubs agreed on a transfer fee of around €1 million plus additional add-ons. It’s thought that the England Under-20 international is set to sign an initial four-year contract with the Gunners.

The outlet had intially reported that Arsenal initiated talks with Ajax for Setford’s transfer earlier this window - and now a deal appears to be concluded.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper has made a significant impression in the Netherlands, progressing through the academy ranks at Ajax and representing England at various youth levels, starting from the Under-16s.

Arsenal are in the midst of revamping their academy's goalkeepers, it is thought, having released shot-stoppers Ovie Ejeheri, James Hillson, and Arthur Okonkwo already this year.

As a result, the club is expected to bring in new talent to strengthen their academy’s goalkeeping department, with Setford being the first one through the door.

Ramsdale's future

Aaron Ramsdale has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal and needs to seek regular playing time elsewhere.

Setford could serve as a long-term replacement for the England international, who could well be sold this window.

Ramsdale is set to be a backup option to David Raya again next term and has often spoken about his need to play regular football.

Ramsdale said on his future to TalkSport: “No footballer wants to not play, I’ve had a tough year personally not playing and I never want to do that again. It was tough, it was tough.

"But I have my release now, I’m now here, I’ve got the greatest honour, the greatest badge on my chest.”
