Atletico Madrid are the club 'most interested' in Conor Gallagher, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Chelsea fan favourite still faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. The Profit and Sustainability deadline has now passed and the 24-year-old did not get turned into 'pure profit.'

Gallagher refused to entertain transfer talks due to being in Germany for Euro 2024 with England and a potential move to Aston Villa did not occur. Despite this, the midfielder could yet be on the way out.

Though there have been tentative suggestions that Chelsea could now offer him a new contract after all, little concrete has thus far materialised on that front, which means that Gallagher will be a free agent this time next year.

Losing him for nothing is a nightmare prospect as far as the west London giants are concerned and they remain in talks with clubs over the potential sale of the England star.

Atletico the favourites?

Despite Aston Villa's previous desire to land Gallagher, Atletico Madrid are now the side with the most credible interest in the player, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The news of Atletico's attraction to Gallagher is not earth-shattering as it has been known for several weeks that Diego Simeone is an admirer, but the Italian transfer expert's insistence that they are 'the most interested club' is a bit of a surprise.

Romano reports that initial talks have already taken place, though the Madrid outfit face a significant hurdle when it comes to Gallagher's price tag. The player is 'still expensive,' according to Romano, but he guarantees that the 'interest is genuine.'

Gallagher is likely viewed as a replacement and upgrade on former Chelsea loanee Saul Niguez, who is set to leave the Metropolitano this summer. The 29-year-old is currently in talks with Sevilla, Romano and El Desmarque report.
