Van Dijk was speaking after his side saw Ollie Watkins score a last-minute winner for England to send the Netherlands crashing out the tournament in Germany.

The 33-year-old captains both his club and country but the Euros could end up being Van Dijk’s last international tournament, while his contract at Liverpool is set to expire next summer.

Asked about his future following the defeat, Van Dijk responded that he ‘hasn’t the slightest idea right now’, saying: “I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we'll go for it again, but first recover from this.

“After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”

Liverpool entering transitionary period after Klopp era

Question marks had already arisen over Van Dijk’s Liverpool future given the departure of Jurgen Klopp, with the end of the German’s era at Anfield marking a transitionary period for the club.

New manager Arne Slot is said to be determined to keep Van Dijk, however it could prove difficult due to the contractual situations surrounding his stars.

Along with Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah also has his contract up in 2025 and the 32-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Van Dijk said in May that there was ‘no news’ over his contract, while the club have yet to conduct any business in the summer since the arrival of Slot.

Goalkeeper Alisson has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and, while it is unlikely Liverpool lose him, Salah and Van Dijk this summer, the club could look to cash in on at least one of those players.
