Promoted Serie A side Como are 'increasingly confident' of being able to pull off the shock signing of Raphael Varane, according to Italian media.

Having achieved promotion to Italy's top flight for the first time in over 20 years, Italian minnows Como are in the midst of an ambitious transfer window.

Due to their illustrious ownership consisting, among others, of Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas, with the latter also serving as nominal assistant coach (even though he is really the one calling the shots), Como are able to attract big names.

The promoted outfit have already managed to secure the signature of former Serie A shooting star Andrea Belotti, who has joined from Roma for €4.5 million. They are also on the verge of completing the signing of Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez, while already boasting former Milan and Wolves striker - and hometown hero - Patrick Cutrone.

The crown jewel of their massive summer window, however, is set to be Raphael Varane.

Como confident of signing Varane

The French megastar, currently a free agent after seeing his Man Utd contract expire, has already been in Como for some time to hold talks with club chiefs and to explore the city.

Varane is trying to be very conscientious in picking his next club, knowing full well that it may be his last. The injury-prone 31-year-old previously insisted that he would end his career at one of his former sides - RC Lens, Real Madrid or Man Utd - but he seems to be intrigued by the Como project.

At least that is according to Italian transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio, who reports that Como are growing more and more confident of being able to secure the World Cup winner's signature.

Di Marzio reports that the signals from Varane's side are becoming 'increasingly positive' and that a 'definitive yes' may not be too far away. While the deal does not appear to be set in stone yet, it looks as though Como are on the verge of landing this coup.

Fabregas will no doubt have played his part in convincing his former El Clasico rival to join, with the Spaniard having also assumed an outsized role in Como's impending acquisition of the aforementioned Lopez. It has been claimed that Fabregas was the key factor in convincing his fellow Catalan to join.
