The disgraced Manchester United forward is edging ever closer to a permanent exit from Old Trafford. Last week, the Red Devils accepted a €31.6 million offer from the Ligue 1 giants that also included add-ons and a whopping 50 per cent sell-on clause.

However, what was still missing for the deal to be considered close was the consent of Greenwood. The attacker, who spent last season on loan at LaLiga outfit Getafe, took time to consider his next move and negotiate terms with Marseille.

What also delayed his decision was the fact that the news of his potential move to the South of France was met with resistance from Marseille fans and even the city's mayor, who branded the Englishman's impending arrival as 'shameful' due to his troubled past.

Greenwood was arrested in 2022 and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The charges were eventually dropped, but the 22-year-old's innocence was never proven.

Marseille agree terms

Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Greenwood has given the green light to a transfer to Marseille. The 22-year-old has agreed personal terms with the storied French club and this is major progress towards his inevitable exit from Man Utd.

Greenwood still needs to complete his medical and put pen to paper on the contract, but these are trifling formalities that are not expected to be a problem unless more uproar about the potential transfer ensues in light of his agreeing terms.

The Man Utd homegrown also had suitors elsewhere, particularly in Italy. Juventus, Napoli and Lazio have all been credited with an interest, while the latter actually tabled a bid for Greenwood.

However, Marseille's offer was ultimately deemed better by Man Utd and new coach Roberto de Zerbi was reportedly heavily pushing for the French club to secure the player's approval. A deal can now be considered close.
