Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is now being linked with a move to Napoli, according to reports.

Italian transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio has suggested that the Southern Italy club are looking to sign the attacker this window, despite it seeming as though he would be joining Marseille.

Greenwood appeared to be on the verge of joining Marseille, but statements from the city's mayor have cast doubt on the deal. Napoli, who have been tracking Greenwood for some time, have now entered the race.

The report states that Marseille remain in the lead, having already reached an agreement with the Red Devils to purchase Greenwood for €31.6 million plus a large percentage, thought to be up to 50 percent, of any future resale. But now the player is having doubts over the switch and will consider his future over the weekend, following the comments from Marseille's mayor.

Mayor Benoit Payan said via RMC radio: “I saw images that deeply shocked me. I believe he cannot have a place in this team.

“The values of Marseille and the values of Olympique de Marseille are anything but that. It’s anything but racism, anti-Semitism. It’s anything but can you imagine, violence against women? Do you realise that? And he claims to play for Olympique de Marseille, Greenwood? It’s a disgrace.

“I will ask the president of Olympique de Marseille not to recruit Greenwood. I don’t want my club to be covered in the shame. It’s not acceptable.”

Mason Greenwood attracts further Serie A interest

Meanwhile, Napoli sporting director, Mauro Meluso, is keen to add another attacker player to bolster Antonio Conte's forward line but needs to move on a current squad member to boost funds.

If Greenwood decides not to join Marseille, Napoli will aim to secure him with a similar deal, with staggered payments. Lazio, another club previously interested in the 22-year-old, are now less likely to pursue him.

In October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He denied all counts, and the criminal charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Greenwood last played for Man Utd in January 2022 and had a contract running until 2025, with the club holding an option to extend for a further year.

He was loaned to Getafe last season, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances and provided six assists.
