Schmeichel turns down Saudi Arabia
Schmeichel recently revealed that he has turned down a move to Saudi Arabia as he eyes a return to the country where he became a legend with Leicester City, winning the 2016 Premier League title and making 479 appearances.
Schmeichel was a target for Nottingham Forest during the January transfer window but he was unable to leave Anderlecht at that time.
According to the Belgian media, there was a mutual option for Schmeichel to extend his contract at Anderlecht for another year.
Anderlecht are understood to have been keen to activate this extension, but Schmeichel politely declined the opportunity and informed the club that he would not communicate any decision until after the Euros.
Anderlecht failed to qualify for the Champions League for 2024-25, falling short on the final day of the past season.
As a result, Anderlecht would not have been able to generate enough money to be able to meet Schmeichel’s wage demands had he decided to stay on.
It’s also believed that Schmeichel saw Anderlecht as less attractive having failed to qualify for Europe’s biggest club competition.
Schmeichel, the son of Denmark and Man Utd legend Peter, has made over 700 club appearances in his career as well as winning 105 caps for Denmark.
