Romano confirms twist in Xavi Simons transfer saga

RB Leipzig are confident of being able to re-sign Xavi Simons, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer saga surrounding the Dutchman finally appears to be drawing to a close. It has been known for weeks that Simons would depart PSG on loan again this summer, but his destination was unknown, with a host of clubs vying for his signature.

The 21-year-old is coming off two stunning campaigns with PSV and RB Leipzig and this attracted the attention of the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd and Bayern Munich. However, Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Man Utd were unlikely to land Simons.

Though the Red Devils had presented their project to the player's camp, they ultimately did this too late. By the time they made contact, Leipzig and Bayern had been courting Simons for weeks.

Indeed, the race to sign him has come down to the two Bundesliga heavyweights and a surprising result is on the cards.

Simons back to Leipzig

According to Romano, Leipzig are now 'confident' that Simons will choose them over Bayern and re-sign for the club. This is a major coup for the Red Bulls as it had previously looked as though Bayern would win out.

The Bavarians' push for Simons was led by director Max Eberl, who has a great relationship with Simons and his family. He was the man who had brought him to Leipzig last year and hoped to be able to work his magic again - but this time for Bayern.

However, it seems that his endeavours will prove fruitless. Though Romano insists that the transfer battle between Leipzig and Bayern continues, it is clear that he believes Simons will head back to Saxony.

It remains to be seen whether Leipzig will manage to include a purchase option in the deal. Romano previously insisted that Simons is '99 per cent' likely to leave PSG permanently next summer.
