At one point, the club was believed to want to sell Thomas Partey and bring in a new midfielder to replace the former Atletico Madrid man. However, the Gunners have pushed for a new holding midfielder regardless and have now sealed the signing of Merino.

Arsenal reached a verbal agreement with Real Sociedad over a transfer fee.

Marca reported: “Mikel Merino is no longer a Real Sociedad player but an Arsenal player after today" before other outlets followed suit and confirmed the information.

Sociedad initially wanted above €40m but the London club managed to bring that fee down.

Now Romano has revealed the details regarding his contract, the overall fee, and wages. On X, formerly known as Twitter, he posted: "Mikel Merino has completed his medical as new Arsenal player with clubs exchanging documents, deal being sealed.

"€32m fixed fee, €5m add-ons and contract until June 2028 plus option for further season."

Arsenal prove to be shrewd negotiators in Merino deal

Sociedad recently managed to fend off Liverpool's interest in Martin Zubimendi, asking for the entirety of the player's release clause to be met. The Gunners enjoy a good relationship with the Spanish outfit, after Kieran Tierney's move to LaLiga on loan last summer.

Merino wanted to move to the Emirates, however, and this put a degree of pressure on Sociedad.

Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay admitted that his side were “condemned" to come to an agreement with the Gunners. The lack of suitors in Merino meant that the side had no leverage against the Premier League giants.

It's not clear when Merino will be announced as an Arsenal player. It's likely to be Monday after the weekend's games are over. A move was not finalised in time for Merino to be registered for the club's 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the late kick-off on Saturday.
