Chelsea vs Juventus for Jadon Sancho: The state of play

Chelsea and Juventus are in a two-horse race to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in the closing days of the summer transfer window.

The situation is quite straightforward.

Sancho is available for transfer from Manchester United as he is well down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order.

Juventus are one of the two teams in talks with United for Sancho.

The Bianconeri want to sign one more winger before Friday’s deadline, and Sancho is the player they want.

Juve already were in negotiations to sign Sancho earlier in the summer, but had to put talks on hold as they didn’t have funds available at that point.

In order to secure those funds, Juventus must first sell Federico Chiesa, who is in talks to join Liverpool (with Barcelona also interested).

Once that is done, Juventus will push forward for a loan deal with an option to buy. Juve require United to cover part of Sancho’s salary. That will be a key part of negotiations to see if Sancho can join Juventus.

Sancho is said to be willing to join Juventus.

But Chelsea are also in negotiations to sign Sancho.

Chelsea have proposed a swap deal with Man Utd that will see Sancho and Raheem Sterling swap clubs.

Sterling is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are desperate to offload him before the deadline.

Chelsea can only bring in Sancho, though, if Sterling moves to Old Trafford.

It is not clear yet whether United would be willing to do this deal.

Sancho is also happy to join Chelsea if a deal can be agreed.

Sancho troubles at Man Utd

Sancho joined Man Utd from Dortmund for €85 million in the summer of 2021.

But he has been a major disappointment at Old Trafford.

He has scored just 12 goals in 82 appearances for United and has regularly been a bench player during his time at the club.

Earlier last season, Sancho was frozen out of the squad at Man Utd.

It came after manager Erik ten Hag criticised Sancho publicly for his poor performances in training, which was followed by the winger essentially calling his manager a liar on social media.

Sancho was not called up again after this incident and was barred from training with the first team, as well as using their facilities and canteen.

Sancho was also deleted from the team’s WhatsApp group by Ten Hag.

United transfer listed him and then sent him on loan to Dortmund in January where he rediscovered some of his form and helped the club to the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid.
