Todd Boehly on the verge of selling 'the future of Chelsea'

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are close to selling a player who was recently described as “the future of Chelsea.”

The Blues’ new owners have implemented a radical transfer strategy since their arrival in 2022 and over €1 billion has been spent on signings during that time.

The majority of Chelsea’s investment has been focused on acquiring the best young talent from across world football, with very few proven stars sealing a Stamford Bridge switch over the past two years.

This summer, the west London club have spent over €100 million on new signings, with Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen one of their most high-profile additions.

However, his arrival promises to signal the end of Djordje Petrovic’s time at the club.

The Serbian only joined Chelsea last year, but he is set to be sold before the 2024 summer transfer window ends.

He doesn’t align with Enzo Maresca’s goalkeeping philosophy and has already been offered to Serie A side Genoa as Chelsea look to offload him.

The Blues’ decision to sell Petrovic comes just months after he was described as “the future of Chelsea” by his Serbia team-mate Dusan Tadic.

What has been said about Djordje Petrovic?

In an interview with the South London Press back in March, Tadic admitted: “Djordje is a great goalkeeper and a great talent and it’s very nice to see him play for Chelsea.

“I saw immediately in training what a great goalkeeper he is. He’s [also] a very good guy and professional.

“Actually I am not surprised [to see him play at Chelsea] because in the past we were also looking at him for Ajax and I remember they asked me about him.

“He was on the list of all the top clubs and if he’s Chelsea number one now is no coincidence.

“I think he can keep his place [following Sanchez’s return] because once goalkeepers take their chance they don’t give it away to nobody.

“I trust him, he’ll do that. He’s the future of Chelsea.”

Petrovic still has six years left on his current Chelsea contract, but the Serbian is expected to leave the club following the arrival of Jorgensen.
