The Argentina international, who helped his nation win the Copa America earlier this summer, started in a No.10 role ahead of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, but he failed to impact the game and his touch in the final-third was extremely disappointing.

Fernandez subsequently dropped into a deeper position when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall replaced Lavia, but things didn't improve much for the 23-year-old and he was easily bypassed for Mateo Kovacic’s goal.

For a player who cost €121 million, and is currently the most expensive player in Premier League history, Fernandez’s performance was extremely poor.

The fact he remained on the pitch and both Lavia and Christopher Nkunku were substituted was a huge surprise, but Enzo Maresca stuck with the Argentine after handing him the captain’s armband for the match.

However, many Chelsea supporters have issued their fury at Fernandez, while rival fans have also poked fun at the Blues, with the Argentina midfielder the subject of their mockery.
